3. Assessing for Dyscalculia and Maths Developmental Delays with a Dyscalculia Specialist

Ideal for schools to bring in specialist skills to assess children.

Target Audience:

Schools, parents and specialist centres

Agenda:

Dyscalculia is a complex disorder where individuals have great difficulty making meaningful sense of numbers. This service is ideal for pupils who are not making age-appropriate progress and are lagging behind their peers in meeting their developmental milestones with maths.

The assessment would, in the first instance, involve an interview with the parents/carers, the pupil and, if necessary, the school teacher. This would be followed up with a standardised test to determine if the pupil is at risk of developmental dyscalculia. Where required, other tests of ability and attainment may be used. Our dyscalculia specialist will also assess the pupil’s difficulties through observation using structured activities. The session takes between two and three hours.

The assessment pinpoints individual differences, showing where the pupil’s strengths lie and the specific areas of difficulty. Our specialist follows this up with an optimal Individual Support Plan, Scheme of Work, a written report and a follow-up session on how best to acquire and promote the necessary skills to journey up the developmental ladder.

5. Title: One-to-one tuition.

Target Audience:

Children who are not making age appropriate progress and are working significantly below their peers in maths.

Tuition:

Under the close guidance of our specialist tutors in dyscalculia we offer an individualised program that uses an integrated and blended approach that is purposefully designed to meet the child’s needs. We believe that every child is unique and for this reason we use a dynamic approach of observing and supporting a pupil with developmental dyscalculia based on the child’s uniqueness and how the child relates to numbers.

A range of pedagogies are used ranging from multisensory activities, on-line activities and written tasks so that the child is not just surface learning but making meaningful connections so that development can be facilitated.

This dedicated approach requires a tremendous amount of interaction, relating concepts, practice in linking the child’s intentions to the methods and thinking in a purposeful and non-uniformed way. Parents are required to be involved during this session.

At the end of each session a review takes place with the parents where techniques and approaches are shared so that over the course of the week the parents/carer, child and specialist teacher are working towards the same goals.
